Lizzy Le Quesne
I have been choreographing and performing for over 25 years. I am honoured and inspired to teach SRT to highly skilled professional dancers, to artists and performers of all kinds, as well as to people just beginning to become aquainted with their physical selves: encouraging freedom, fullness, expression and articulacy in dancing and movement.
I teach SRT to professional dancers, dance companies, conservatoires and universities, and community groups internationally. I also teach improvisation, choreography, critical theory and arts writing. Recent teaching includes Kinitiras Athens, Independent Dance London, Conway Collective, University of Bath Spa, University of Surrey, Candoco Dance Company, Ballet in Small Spaces, University of Brighton, London Metropolitan University, Prague Academy of Performing Arts and Duncan Centre Conservatoire for Modern Dance Prague.
With a background in classical ballet, BA in fine art and dance, MA choreography and extensive somatic training and practise, I work across media in dance, photography, moving image, text and site. My own movement/text/photography works have been presented in festivals, art fairs and museums including Kyoto Arts Centre, National Gallery of Modern Art Prague, ArtPrague, Tanec Praha, Preview Berlin Art Fair, TAP, VideoDanza Buenos Aires and What Now Festival, London. I have made work for specific sites including Prague Castle, shopping centres/offices/public spaces in London, NYC, Prague, Berlin and Southend and have choreographed for The Hackney Empire, Place Theatre, The National Theatre Prague and festivals worldwide. I have an ongoing investigative collaboration with Carolyn Roy.
I also perform with other artists including Wally Cardona, Michael Klien, Rosemary Lee, Florence Peake, Ricochet Dance Productions, Tino Sehgal, Susanna Szperling, Darlene Stevens, in contexts including Dance Umbrella, Spring Loaded, 4+4 Days in Motion, IMZ, Tate Modern, Jacobs Pillow, Hayward Gallery etc.
Formerly Editor in Chief of Czech dance magazine TanecniZona, and arts writer for The Prague Post I write and broadcast extensively about dance, photography, embodiment and somatics for multiple national and international arts publications and books including Afterall, Animated, Contemporary, Umulec, Journal of Dance and Somatic Practices, Dance Magazine USA, Tanz. I am currently working on a chapter for the upcoming first book on Skinner Releasing.
After being based for several years in the Czech Republic including a year as British Council Artist in Residence at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts, and guest teacher at the Conservatory of Modern Dance, I returned to London in 2005.
